Fine for bear attack establishes a standard
The final penalty for the leader of the Czech tour group that was attacked by a polar bear in March will set a precedent for similar cases in the future.
The polar bear that entered the tent camp of a tourist group from the Czech Republic was wounded in the confrontation, and later had to be put down by the police. The leader of the camp have been given a fine of 10.000 Norwegian kroners for failing the secure the camp properly. The law on Svalbard require people to have safety measures in place around the camp sites in order to protect themselves and scare of the polar bears to avoid a confrontation.
